Jose Alejandro Santiestaban and Maria Manuela Martinez marriage 1835 ~ Sandia

We all have worked with diligencia matrimoniales or marriage investigations.  I found one that keep puzzling me as I have a Jacinto Gutierrez line I keep trying to figure out.

At Sandia, on November 5, 1835, Jose Alejandro Santiesteban widow of doña Maria Ignacia Martines with doña Maria Manuela Martines, daughter of Salbador Martines and Maria Rita Burtierres. (Sandia Marriages, pg. 35)

Jose Alejandro Santisteban had been married previously to Maria Candelaria Martin, she the daughter of Pablo Martin and Maria Manuela Gutierres on February 25, 1811.  (Sandia Marriages, pg. 20)

So I found this DM chart at the library that depicts some interesting information.

Felis Martines has two sons, Salbador and Pablo.
Salvador marries Maria Rita Gutierrez.
Pablo marries Maria Manuela Gutierrez.
Now, Salvador and Pablo are brothers and sons of Felis Martines and Rutila Salazar.
The sisters, Rita and Manuela are sisters and daughter of Jacinto Gutierrez and Andrea Baca.

Then the daughters of the those children marry with Jose Alejandro Santistevan.  Maria Rita Gutierres' daughter Maria Biviana Martin also married him.  It gets very confusing as he marries three times into the same family lineage.

I'm still trying to figure this all out from the documents that I already have.  The bottom line is I made no headway on my Jacinto Gutierres.

Attending Conferences or Workshops

On Saturday, I attended a one day event at one of our local FHL centers on the west side.  Sometimes we get lazy and don't go or find excuses that we know everything - so what could we possibly learn.  Since I was going to be there anyway as I was delivering a lecture on Colonial New Mexico Military, I spent the whole day.  I'm so glad I went.

First of all, the speakers were all really good.  Second, the location for me was fantastic and parking was about as good as it can get.

One of the two lectures I attended that I would like to share was one done by our local Librarian, Lisa Kendrick.  She is really very helpful when you are down at the Genealogy Center at the Main Library.  The information she gave us was outstanding.  I didn't know that there were several free things you can logon from home and utilize from the Libraries Resources, you just need a library card - which is free.  So I'll need to try all of those.

While in the library itself, there are many collections and the Local Information Network (LAN) that has many things none of us use on a regular basis.  We are missing out as it is a well kept secret.  Maybe the persons using it don't tell the rest of us so we don't impede their use.

I also got a peek into what they currently have at the Special Collections Library.  I'll have to make a special trip to visit and take a look at their many collections and books.

The other speaker I really liked was Valerie Hansen on "Breaking Down Your Brick Walls."  I enjoy methodology classes more than anything else.  She was really really good.  I came home with some thoughts on how to problem solve some of my adobe walls. I especially likes the idea of writing a summary of your problem and seeing how many gaps there are; it draws your attention to some voids that you might need to fill.  Plus sharing your research and having that second or third person take a look at your problem.  I do this often with some close friends, but using a family group sheet and really taking a look at someone's work takes time.  So find that buddy and start working on your adobe walls or as she calls them problems.

Next time there is a free event, please plan on attending.

After several posts on the Cañon de San Diego Jemez Land Grant in the last few weeks, there have been some questions as to the parents and also descendants of the two brothers, Francisco and Antonio Garcia who received the land grant.  I'm posting the parents for them along with their siblings that I currently have; meaning there could be more children for Blas Garcia and his wife Antonia Gongora.  There could also be more marriages for the children, but I was focusing on the land grant and then the soldiers.

Rito de los Frijoles Land Grant ~ Bernalillo County

Around 1740, Andres Montoya received a land grant in an area seven leagues north of Cochiti and called Rito de los Frijoles.  In May 1884, heirs of the land were in Private Land Claims Court filing papers that via inheritance they owned the lands.  The family was that of Antonia Rosa Lujan, now deceased, but a granddaughter of Andres Montoya.  In an earlier document dated 1814, Antonia Rosa Lujan states that her father Juan Antonio Lujan (Barbara Rosa Montoya) was the son-in-law of Andres Montoya.

In the testimony we find the children of Juan Antonio Lujan and Barbara Rosa Montoya, which helps to recreate the genealogy for this family.  We also find that we have two Tomas Salas men, both grandchildren of said couple, but in the testimony separating them can be confusing.  Instead of writing up all the particulars in the land grant, I am just going to show the entire family genealogy.
